James Simpson was a native of Stirling, Scotland. He served during the Great War with the 10th (Service) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the French theatre of war from 11 May 1915. Simpson advanced to Warrant Officer Class 2, and subsequently transferred to the 1/5th (Renfrewshire) Battalion. The latter served in the Egyptian theatre of war, February 1916 - April 1918, before serving in the French theatre of war for the first time from 17 April 1918.
