James Cole was born in Bath, Somerset, on 4 August 1843, and joined the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard on 23 May 1864. He was posted to the newly-created ‘J’ (Bethnal Green) Division in August 1886, and retired on 11 July 1889, after 25 years’ service.
