Gilbert Francis Sutton was born in Oundle, Northamptonshire, on 1 June 1894, and attested for the London Regiment, serving with the 28th Battalion (Artists Rifles) during the Great War on the Western Front from 26 October 1914. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, General List, on 3 April 1915, and subsequently served with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.
