John Angus was born in Edinburgh on 3 December 1878, and attested for the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Edinburgh on 20 August 1896. He was posted to H.M.S. Highflyer on 16 May 1900, and served during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 26 November to 15 December 1902, from 27 February to 6 April 1903, and from 14 to 27 July 1903. He was discharged on 23 September 1905, upon being enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve, and was recommended by the Master of the S.S. Knight of the Thistle ‘for good service rendered when the ship was being abandoned, acting as signalman thereby enabling survivors to reach the S.S. Vulcan in safety, and also for saving the telescopic sights and binoculars.’

He saw further service with the Royal Marine Light Infantry during the Great War, and was awarded a Hurt Certificate on 14 May 1918. He was finally demobilised on 8 April 1919.
