Five: Painter 1st Class C. Bean, Royal Navy, who died on 18 December 1917

Victorious.) contact marks especially to AGS, generally very fine (5) £280-£320

Charles Bean was born in Stonegate, Yorkshire, on 12 August 1878, and joined the Royal Navy as a Painter 2nd Class on 26 August 1899. Posted to H.M.S. Cossack on 29 March 1900, he served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 18 January to 12 May 1902, and again from 2 February to 4 June 1903. Promoted Painter 1st Class on 19 February 1906, whilst serving in H.M.S. Sappho, he transferred to H.M.S. Victorious on 29 July 1914, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 17 September 1914. He served during the Great War in Victorious, and in H.M.S. Prince George, before being shore invalided on 27 September 1916. He died at home on 18 December 1917, and is buried under a C.W.G.C. headstone in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.
