Frederick McCarthy was born in Dublin and attested there for the South Irish Horse. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 December 1915, and subsequently with the 7th (South Irish Horse) Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 12 December 1917, and is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery, France.
