Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (A. Hunter, Sto., H.M.S. Merlin.) minor edge bruising, very fine £140-£180

Alexander Hunter was born in Drumbane, Londonderry, on 12 July 1876, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 28 December 1897. Advanced Stoker on 6 April 1899, whilst serving in H.M.S. Ramillies, he transferred to H.M.S. Merlin on 1 May 1903, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 15 June 1903 to 24 February 1904. Promoted Stoker 1st Class on 1 July 1906, he was posted to H.M.S. Blake on 27 June 1907, and drowned off Granton Harbour, Edinburgh, when his dinghy capsized- the subsequent Court of Inquiry found that the accident was due to one of the men in the dinghy capsizing it when attempting to recover his cap which had been blown overboard.
