Three men with the name ‘J. Martin’ served in the 90th Light Infantry (Perthshire Volunteers) during the Indian Mutiny, and all were entitled to the medal with clasps Defence of Lucknow and Lucknow: Sergeant Joseph Martin (who died on 31 March 1858); and two Privates John Martin.
The 90th Light Infantry embarked for service in China in April 1857. En-route, however, the regiment was diverted to India and took part in the operations against Lucknow as part of Havelock’s First Relief Force, and at the subsequent capture of Lucknow on 21 March 1858.
