Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Sapper Thos. Long, Royal Engrs.) light contact marks, otherwise good very fine and scarce £400-£460
Thomas Long was born in the Parish of Romsey, Hampshire, and attested for the Royal Engineers at Southampton on 16 April 1856, aged 19, a shoe maker by trade. He served abroad in India for 2 years 7 months and was ‘present at the Defence of Jellalabad, capture of Lucknow, action of Barree, Russia Rampoor & Passage of the Gogra during the Indian Mutiny in 1858, for which he received the Indian War Medal & Clasp for Lucknow.’ He was discharged on 13 February 1861, in consequence of pulmonary disease. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll entry confirming Lucknow clasp, one of 150 awarded to the Royal Engineers.
