Mark Singleton was born in Kensington, London, in August 1828. He was privately educated on the Isle of Wight, and was nominated as a Cadet for the Bengal Infantry by John Shepherd and Sir Charles Wade, C.B. He was commissioned Ensign in the Bengal Infantry in December 1845, and served as a Lieutenant in the 71st Native Infantry from August 1847. He resigned his commission in India on 1 January 1852.
