Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Private Thomas Carter H.M. 16th Lancers) fitted with contemporary silver bar suspension, nearly very fine £650-£750

Thomas Carter was born at Brotherton, near Ferry Bridge, Yorkshire, and attested for the 16th Lancers at Leeds on 2 May 1832, aged 24 years 5 months. He served abroad in the East Indies from 30 January 1835 to 11 August 1846, and ‘served throughout the Campaign in Afghanistan in 1838/9 (Medal); Also in the Action at Maharajpoor in Decr. 1843 (Star), at Aliwal in Jany. 1846 (Medal) and at Sobraon in Feby. 1846 (Clasp).’ Carter was discharged at Dublin on 7 June 1856, with twenty-four years 38 days service, in consequence of varicose veins in the left leg and rheumatic pains in the loins. Then aged 48 years 5 months, he was described as ‘a very good soldier, seldom in Hospital. He is in possession of the silver Medal for Long and Meritorious Service [i.e. L.S. & G.C. not M.S.M.] - was wounded in the left leg by a musket ball at Aliwal.’ His intended place of residence was Leeds and he was admitted to a Chelsea In-Pension on 28 March 1865.
