Hugh J. Barther was a native of Conway, Wales. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards in the French theatre of war from 17 August 1915. Barther subsequently transferred to the 6th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in February 1920.
