T. G. Daniels served during the Second World War in 266 Battery, 62 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment and was wounded during the Luftwaffe raid on Hull on 8 May 1941. The War Diary gives the following account:
‘On 9th May 1941 at 00:06 a considerable number of enemy aircraft commenced their attack on Hull. It soon became apparent that the city, with its large industries and docks was their objective. Humber (Anti-Aircraft)Guns immediately opened fire on the enemy. The main attack lasted just over 3 hours and during that time mines, oil bombs, high explosives and incendiary bombs were rained on Hull despite the terrific barrage sustained by the anti-aircraft defences. Many large industrial buildings and warehouses were either domolished or set on fire. Provincial shopping centres were also gutted. Damage to the docks was of an extensive nature and in some parts of the city. During the raid a land mine fell on the Humber ‘C’ site and completely demolished all sleeping huts and dining rooms. Fortunately most of the personnel were manning guns 250 yards away and only three men were killed [this is probably where Gunner Daniels was wounded]. A total of 1,971 rounds were fired during the raid, and two category One claims for destruction of enemy aircraft were admitted.’
