Penton Alexander Cowan was born in Harrismith, Orange Free State, and attested for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 27 August 1915, aged 26. Appointed Lance-Corporal on 1 March 1916, he served with the 2nd South African Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front from 20 April 1916, and died of wounds received in action on 13 July 1916. He is buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-le-Sec, France.
