Pair: Chaplain to the Forces the Reverend J. Calderbank, Royal Army Chaplains’ Department

John Calderbank was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, in 1886, and was educated at Selwyn College, Cambridge. He was ordained Deacon in 1914, and Priest in 1915, and served as Curate of Penrith from 1914, before joining the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department as Chaplain to the Forces 4th Class on 10 December 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 June 1916. Following the cessation of hostilities Calderbank served as Curate of St. James’, Ashtead, Birmingham, 1918-20; Curate of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Bradford, 1920-23; Vicar of Barnoldswick, 1923-30; Vicar of Calverley, Leeds, 1930-50; and Vicar of Mitton, 1950-56. He was appointed an Honorary Canon of Bradford Cathedral in 1942, and died in Lincoln in March 1970.
