Joseph Stothard Mercer was born in Belfast, Ireland, on 6 July 1896, and having emigrated to Canada attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Toronto, Ontario, on 10 November 1914. He served with the 19th Battalion, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 September 1915, and suffered a gun shot wound to the left arm in September 1916. Admitted to hospital at Dieppe on 16 September, he was invalided back to Canada via the U.K. on 19 February 1917, and was discharged medically unfit as a result of his wounds on 30 September 1917. He died on 12 March 1972.

James Waters was born in Cornwall on 6 May 1875, and having emigrated to Canada attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Hamilton, Ontario, on 26 July 1915. He served with the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front, and died of wounds on 19 June 1916. He is buried in Lijjsenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
