Frederick Ernest Watson, R.N.V.R., was killed in action when serving on H.M.S. Sarnia, 12 September 1918, aged 24 years. H.M.S. Sarnia was formerly a cross-channel steamship taken up by the Admiralty and used as an armed boarding steamship. She was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the Mediterranean on 12 September 1918. Watson’s name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. He was the son of Henry James and Kate Watson, of Park View, Westfield, Battle, Sussex.
