‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While firing in support of an infantry attack, his trench mortars were very heavily shelled by the enemy. When two gun pits were blown in he cleared them and got the mortars into action again, and continued to fire with great success. He showed splendid coolness and courage on this and many other occasions.’
