Sir William Wynne Honywood, MC, 10th Bt (1891-1982), educ. Downside School, Bath, was an early racing motorcyclist, competing in many events between 1912 and the outbreak of War. He enlisted in the 17th Lancers in August 1914 and was subsequently commissioned into the 7th Bty Motor Machine Gun Service in January 1915. Honywood served on the front line at Ypres from April to September 1915, winning the Military Cross and being mentioned in despatches three times before being evacuated wounded. Major-General Sir Edward Northey, GCMG, CB (1868-1953), commanded a brigade of the KRRC on the Western Front in 1914-15 before being invalided back to England from wounds suffered at the second Battle of Ypres. In December 1915 he was posted to Nyasaland to command the Nyasa-Rhodesia Field Force and Honywood travelled with him, serving as his aide-de-camp until the end of the War. At the cessation of hostilities Northey became governor of the British East African Protectorate (later known as Kenya). Honywood became an airship pilot and subsequently became an adjutant in the Ceylon Mounted Rifles and the Ceylon Planters’ Rifle Corps. In World War II he commanded 8th Bn of the KSLI and succeeded to the baronetcy in 1944
