William I (1066-1087), Penny, Profile Left type, Cambridge, Wulfwine, pvlfpine on grn, 1.26g/9h (EMC 2017.0325; Allen, BNJ 2016, pp.164-5; N 839; S 1250). A little flat in places, otherwise very fine and extremely rare £1,000-1,200
Provenance: Found near Thetford (Norfolk).
This specimen appears to be from the same dies as the Fitzwilliam coin, previously in Lord Stewartby’s collection. Wulfwi is a known moneyer at Cambridge for Edward the Confessor’s Facing Bust type (Freeman 99) and Wulfwine appears on a rare coin of William’s Canopy type (EMC 2010.0299)
