Wardell, J., A Catalogue of Tradesmen’s Tokens of the Seventeenth Century, Relating to Yorkshire. Leeds, 1852. 34pp, 6 engraved plates (Manville –). Green card wappers [front partially detached]; internally fine, extremely rare £150-200

Provenance: Ex libris David Griffiths, DNW Auction T9, 6 October 2010, lot 4275 [from D.R.D. Edmunds June 1988]; Christopher Street [from N.A. Clark].

The descriptions in this catalogue were, for the time, very advanced in terms of reproducing the detail on the tokens themselves. James Wardell (†1873), the antiquarian and deputy town clerk of Leeds, graciously dedicated his catalogue to William Boyne in 1851; one only wishes that Boyne, and subsequently George Williamson, had used the same level of detail in their own catalogues which appeared in 1858 and 1889
