British Empire Medal (Military) G.VI.R., 1st issue (4439782 Sgt. George H. Elliott, R.A.) good very fine £80-100

B.E.M. London Gazette 1 January 1945. The recommendation states:

‘This Bombardier has for the last two and a half years been in charge of a Construction Party totalling from time to time as many as 80 men and has shouldered his responsibilities with outstanding energy. He has throughout shown great ability and exceptional initiative. He has been personally responsible to no small extent for the completion of a comprehensive and difficult construction policy in the Tyne and Tees area and has met and tackled all difficulties and obstacles with continual zeal and cheerfulness. Many hundreds of A.T.S. and R.A. personnel have to thank him for the considerable comfort in which they live. Due to his skill and devotion to duty he has saved the public large sums of money. It has not been possible to show appreciation of his power of command by normal promotion as there is no establishment on which he can be held at higher rank than Bombardier. Bombardier Elliott has set a splendid example to the men serving under him, who have relied on his resource and leadership. His work for his country is in need of recognition.’

George Hobson Elliott was serving in 151 (M.) H.A.A. Regiment, R.A. at the time of receiving his B.E.M.
