A C.B.E. and K.P.M. group of three awarded to Captain Sir Fullarton James, Bt., Chief Constable of Northumberland

The Order of the British Empire, C.B.E. (Civil) 1st type neck badge, in case of issue; King’s Police Medal, G.V.R. (Capt. Fullarton James, Ch. Const. Northumberland) in its red leather presentation case; Jubilee 1935, in box of issue, together with two Radnorshire Constabulary buttons joined by a chain for wearing with a cape, and various family medals, comprising M.B.E. (Civil) 1st type, in case of issue with miniature; Jubilee 1935 (Ladies), in case; Voluntary Medical Services Medal, silver with three bars (Penel Fullarton James) and a number of Red Cross profficiency medals and badges, several named, generally extremely fine (Lot) £500-600

Fullarton James was born on 15 May 1864, 5th son of Francis Edward James of Keralaw, Ayrshire. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge (B.A. 1886, M.A. 1919), and was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1891. He served as a Captain in the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, was formerly Chief Constable of Radnorshire before becoming Chief Constable of Northumberland in 1900, which position he held until 1935. He was appointed O.B.E. (Civil) in 1918, and C.B.E. (Civil) in 1926. He married in 1899, Penel, daughter of J. K. J. Hichens, and brother of Lieutenant J. B. Hichens, K.R.R.C., who was killed in 1916. Captain Fullarton James succeeded his brother, Sir Edward Albert James, as 6th Baronet in 1942, and died on 19 July 1955 (See Lots 1272 and 1379 for related family medals).
