Richard Coppen was born in the Parish of St Lawrence, near Ramsgate, Kent, in about 1832. He served as a Stoker on board Horatio from 1 February 1854 and joined H.M.S. Miranda on 9 March 1854, serving in that ship in the Baltic and in the Sea of Azoff. His Baltic and Crimean medals were sent to Miranda on 14 April 1857.
