Herbert Oris Thompson was born at Lower Hare Park, Newmarket in 1898 and enlisted in the Irish Guards in May 1916. Originally held on the Army Reserve, he was posted to the 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards in January 1917 and to the 2nd Battalion in March 1918, in which latter month he went to France. Thompson was subsequently taken P.O.W. on 13 April, while serving in ‘A’ Company. Released in late November, he was discharged back home in November 1919.
