A Peninsula and Waterloo group of three to Corporal Gabriel Leunig, 3rd Hussars, King’s German Legion, awarded the Guelphic Medal for gallantry at the battle of the Göhrde in 1813

Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Sahagun & Benevente (Gabriel Leunig, 3rd Hussars K.G.L.); Waterloo 1815 (Corp. Gabriel Leunig, 3rd Reg. Hussars K.G.L.) fitted with replacement silver suspension similar to the Guelphic Medal; Hannoverian Medal for Volunteers of the K.G.L. 1814, contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine and better (3) £1800-2200

Corporal Gabriel Leunig was awarded the Guelphic Medal in the 1818 List:

‘With Corporal Engelke and Hussar Stenzig took part in the attack by 5 Squadrons against a square at the Göhrde on 16 September 1813. The Squadron became disorganised and had to retire. The three men, whose horses had been killed, fell in the midst of the enemy, but succeeded however in cutting their way through on foot. Leunig brought two prisoners back with him; he provided himself at once with another horse and was ready for action by the time of the next charge.’ (Ref Von Wissel p263)

Corporal Leunig served in Captain Charles Bremer’s Troop at Waterloo, and was still alive in 1856.
