Five: Corporal S. J. Palmer, Devonshire Regiment

British War and Victory Medals (21871 Cpl. S. J. Palmer. Devon. R.); Defence Medal; Coronation 1953; Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, G.V.R., 2nd issue, 3 clasps, Long Service 1939, Long Service 1943, Long Service 1947 (Sidney J. Palmer) mounted as worn; together with the recipient’s Devon Special Constable lapel badge, bronze and enamel, good very fine (5) £70-£90

Sidney John Palmer was born in Payhembury, near Honiton, Devon, in 1894, and attested for the Devonshire Regiment on 9 December 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from June 1916, before transferring to the Labour Corps in April 1917. He was promoted Corporal on 14 May 1917, and temporary Sergeant on 20 June 1919, before being demobilised on 11 October 1919. He joined the Devon Special Constabulary in 1929, and was employed thus during the Second World War- it is probable therefore that he witnessed the aftermath of the bombing of Exeter in April 1942. Subsequently, for his services in the Devon Constabulary, he was awarded the 1953 Coronation Medal.

Sold with three National Rifle Association Medals, one dated ‘1950’, the others unnamed; a British Legion lapel badge; a portrait photograph of the recipient; and copied service papers and other research.
