Allan Henry Covington was born in Hornsey, Middlesex, on 26 July 1894 and was educated at the University of London. He joined the Honourable Artillery Company, and was mobilised for service on 8 September 1914. He served with the 3rd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 December 1914, and was wounded by gun shot to the left leg on 16 February 1915. Advanced Lance-Sergeant on 1 April 1916, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Honourable Artillery Company on 25 October 1916.
