Walter George Davis was born in Gosport, Hampshire, on 6 December 1894, and enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Gosport on 23 August 1912. He served during the Great War in the Portsmouth Division, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a Gratuity, on 15 January 1928. He was shore pensioned on 5 December 1933, on the termination of his second period of engagement, and subsequently enlisted in the Royal Navy Police on 17 April 1934.
