Edward Francis Coley was born at Cranbrook, Kent, on 15 December 1877, and enlisted into the Royal Marines on 1 January 1896. He was posted to the Chatham Division on 8 July 1896 and served afloat in the following ships: Sans Pareil (February 1897 to February 1898), Isis (May 1898 to January 1902), Cossack (July 1902 to August 1903), Aboukir (November-December 1906), and Sapphire II (January-February 1907). He was discharged on 3 January 1908, on completion of his limited period of service.
