Four: Lieutenant J. E. Watkins, 4th South African Infantry, late Imperial Yeomanry, who was severely wounded at Delville Wood on 16 July 1916, resulting in the amputation of his left leg

John Edward Watkins served with the 92nd (3rd Sharpshooters) Company, 23rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War,and with the 4th Mounted Rifles during the Great War. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the 4th South African Infantry on 16 September 1915, and served with them on the Western Front. He was severely wounded in his left leg and right heel by gun shot at Delville Wood on 16 July 1916, which resulted in the amputation of left leg and the limited use of his right foot. He was subsequently discharged on account of his wounds.
