John William Marshall was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1869 and attested for the 5th Dragoon Guards at Huddersfield on 23 May 1890. Appointed Shoeing Smith on 1 January 1893, he served with the Regiment in India from 6 September 1893 to 3 December 1899, and in South Africa from 4 December 1899 to 1 August 1902. Advanced Sergeant Farrier on 12 November 1897, he transferred to the 7th Dragoon Guards shortly before being discharged on 30 September 1902, after 12 years and 130 days’ service.
