Pair: Piper J. Finlayson, Highland Light Infantry

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Tel-El-Kebir (2654. Piper J. Finlayson. 2/ High: L.I.); Khedive’s Star 1882, unnamed as issued, clasp carriage pierced on first, contact marks and pitting from Star, with traces of adhesive to last, nearly very fine (2) £300-£400

John Finlayson was born in Back, near Stornoway, in the Outer Hebrides, in 1862 and attested for the 59th Brigade at Glasgow on 22 May 1880, having previously served in the Highland Rifles. Appointed Piper on 11 January 1881, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, on 1 July of that year, and served with the Regiment in Egypt from 8 August to 31 October 1882, where he was present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He subsequently served in India from 1 October 1884 to 28 April 1885, before being discharged medically unfit on 9 June 1885, after 5 years and 19 days’ service.
