John Sharp was born in Dalmore, Nairn, Scotland, and attested for the Royal Highlanders at Edinburgh, in November 1881. He served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt, August 1882 - April 1886. Sharp was discharged, 24 November 1893, having served 12 years with the Colours.
