Caleb Spencer was born in London on 23 November 1811, and joined the Royal Navy in May 1831. He transferred as a Rope Maker to H.M.S. Leopard on 8 February 1853. He served in her in the Baltic and during the Crimean War, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in February 1855, shortly before his discharge on 31 July 1856.
