Donald Munro was born in Forres, Moray, Scotland, and attested for the Scottish Horse at Inverness on 29 May 1901, having previously served in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 26 June 1901 to 27 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902, after 1 year and 97 days’ service.
