Herbert Hankey was appointed to the Indian Civil Service on 23 January 1856 and arrived in India on 13 June 1856, serving initially as Assistant Commissioner of the Third Class in the Punjab an Delhi Divisions from 8 April 1858. He was subsequently appointed Joint Magistrate in Backergunge, before being appointed temporary Magistrate and Collector of Noacolly on 1 May 1862. Returning to Backergunge, his next appointment was as Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Chittagong, from 2 February 1863. His final appointment was as Commissioner of Revenue and Circuit, Chittagong Division.
