Thomas Connell attested for the 14th (Prince of Wales’ Own) Regiment of Foot and served with them in New Zealand during the Maori Wars from January 1861 to September 1866, where he was present during the actions at Kohuroa, Paparata, Rangariri, Orakau, Putajhi, Otapawa, and Waikoko.
