A Second War ‘North West Europe’ B.E.M. group of five awarded to Sergeant M. Daniels, Royal Army Service Corps, attached Intelligence School 9 (Western European Area), for his services with Military Intelligence

Montague Daniels was educated at Burton Grammar School and, having attested for the Royal Army Service Corps, served during the Second World War with the Intelligence School 9 (the executive branch of M.I.9) in North West Europe- it's job was to gather intelligence so as to assist British and Commonwealth service personnel to evade capture when behind enemy lines and to help Prisoners of War to escape, partly through a network of local ‘helpers’, and by developing and delivering hidden aids to help evaders and escapers to get back home.

Sold with named Buckingham Palace enclosure for the B.E.M.; Army Council enclosure for the campaign awards; a newspaper cutting announcing the award, with a photograph of the recipient; and an official copy of a letter from Lieutenant-Colonel L. Winterbottom, O.B.E., I.S.9, to Major H.D. White, I.S.9 (A.B.), Paris, dated 30 January 1946, which states:
‘Will you please inform Sergeant Daniels that he has been awarded the B.E.M. His name appeared in a recent Gazette. Will you also tell him how delighted I am that his excellent work with us and I.S.9 (W.E.A.) has been given official recognition. Please convey to him my heartiest congratulations.’
