D.C.M. London Gazette 25 November 1916:

‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He was mainly instrumental in capturing 20 prisoners, and was of the greatest assistance to his Company Officer in organising a bombing attack. He set a fine example of coolness and initiative.’

Percy Galley was a native of Leeds, who resided at 7 Waverley, Grove, Beeston Hill, and was employed as a conductor on the Leeds City Tramways prior to military service. He served during the Great War with the 6th (Service) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment in Gallipoli from 2 July 1915. Galley served with the Battalion in the Egyptian theatre of war from January 1916, and in the French theatre of war from July 1916. The 6th Battalion served as part of the 32nd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division on the Somme, September - October 1916. The Battalion served at the battles of the Scarpe and the Sambre throughout 1918.
