A Great War 1918 ‘Western Front’ M.C. group of three awarded to Lieutenant E. H. Maxwell, Liverpool Regiment, for his gallantry at Bullcourt on 28 August 1918

Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse privately engraved ‘Lieut. E. H. Maxwell 9th. “King’s” Liverpool Regt. Bullecourt 28th. Augt. 1918’; British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. E. H. Maxwell.) mounted with the BWM and VM in the incorrect order, contact marks, very fine (3) £700-£900

M.C. London Gazette 2 December 1918:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative during several day’s operation, He took command of his company when the company commander became a casualty and led it with great skill. It was to a large extent due to his courage and determination that operations proved to be successful.’

Edgar Holgate Maxwell was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Liverpool Regiment (Territorial Force) on 1 August 1917, and served with the 9th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, distinguishing himself at Bullecourt in August 1918.

Sold with the recipient’s Certificate appointing him a Life Member of the Peebles Kilwinning Lodge, Grand Lodge of Scotland, dated 17 December 1920; and a portrait photographic image of the recipient.
