The Efficiency Medal awarded to Corporal J. Cunningham, 3 Royal Tank Regiment (R.A.C.), a Sherman Tank driver who was awarded the M.M. for his gallantry during a full armoured attack south of El Hamma, North Africa, 26 March, 1943, prior to being attached to No. 2 Commando for operational service during the Second War

M.M. London Gazette 17 June 1943. The original recommendation for an immediate award - approved by Montgomery - states:

‘On 26 March 1943, during a full armoured attack by the unit south of El Hamma, Trooper Cunningham was the driver of a Sherman tank. During an engagement with enemy tanks, which were supported by anti-tank guns and infantry, his tank was knocked out and caught fire, causing the crew to evacuate.

Shortly after, Trooper Cunningham returned to the tank, which was still under heavy fire, and succeeded in putting out the flames.

He then reported to his Squadron Leader by wireless, and stayed with his tank until our infantry consolidated the position.

This action, carried out in the face of heavy enemy fire, was a fine example of personal courage and saved valuable equipment.’

James Cunningham was a native of Oldham, Lancashire, and served during the Second War with 3 Royal Tank Regiment (R.A.C.) in North Africa and also with No. 2 Commando.

Cunningham’s M.M. and Second War campaign awards were sold in these rooms in December 2008.
