Charles Alexander Roosmale-Cocq was born on 10 July 1868, and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Regiment on 6 July 1889. He transferred to the Indian Army on 13 December 1890. Served on the North West Frontier of India 1897-98, Malakand, Buner, and action of the Tanna Pass (Medal with clasp). Captain, 6 July 1900; Captain and Wing Officer, 43rd Erinpura Regiment, 29 November 1901, attached Supply and Transport Corps; Major, 6 July 1907; Double Company Commander, 10th Gurkha Rifles, 7 October 1908; 2nd in command, 1/8th Gurkha Rifles, 6 October 1914; operations in Mesopotamia, March to November 1916; Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant, 1/8th Gurkhas, 2 September 1917.
