Richard David Williams was commissioned Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force on 17 August 1937 and was promoted Flying Officer on 17 March 1939. Following the outbreak of the Second World War he was promoted Flight Lieutenant on 3 September 1940, and Squadron Leader on 1 December 1941, and for his services during the Second World War was Mentioned in Despatches ‘in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period July 1941 to October 1941’ (London Gazette 30 June 1942).

Following the cessation of hostilities, Williams served with the Royal Air Force in South East Asia, and was additionally awarded the King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct (
London Gazette 13 June 1946). Promoted Wing Commander on 1 January 1951, he was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1955 New Year’s Honours’ List, and, having been promoted to Group Captain, was advanced to a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1963 Birthday Honours’ List.
