Thomas Hyde was born in Newbury, Berkshire, and attested for the 60th Foot at Portsmouth, in November 1862. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the East Indies, September 1867 - January 1881 (entitled to Afghanistan 1878-80 Medal with ‘Ahmed Khel’ and ‘Kandahar’ clasps). Hyde served with the Regiment during the First Boer War in the Transvaal. He was discharged, 7 March 1882, having served 19 years and 32 days with the Colours.
