George Potts was born in London and attested there for General Service on 30 December 1875. Posted to the Welsh Regiment, he transferred to the 94th Foot (Connaught Rangers), and served with them in South Africa from 2 April 1879, being present at the Battle of Ulundi, 3 July 1879. Transferring to the Royal Irish Regiment, he served in Egypt in 1882, before taking his discharge. Following the outbreak of the Boer War he re-enlisted in the Royal Irish Reserve Regiment on 23 March 1900, for one year’s service with the Colours, but there is no evidence of him having served abroad.
