Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (1514 Pte. E. Costello. 1/5th. Fusrs.) heavy contact marks to obverse, this fair, the reverse better £70-90

Edward Costello was born in Galway in 1845 and attested for the 5th Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) at Preston, Lancashire, on 28 May 1864, having previously served in the 3rd Lancashire Militia. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from 23 August 1866 to 10 December 1880, and saw action during the Second Afghan War, serving in Afghanistan from 3 December 1878 to 8 June 1879 and also from 24 December 1879 to 20 August 1880. Awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with a gratuity, he was discharged at Dublin on 23 June 1885, after 21 years and 27 days’ service.
