Owen Jones was born in Llanberis, Carnarvonshire, in 1866 and attested for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Wrexham on 25 November 1885. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from 9 September 1887 to 23 January 1894, and took part in the Hazara Expedition of 1891. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 1 February 1894, he was discharged on 24 November 1897, after 12 years with the Colours.
