Candahar Ghuznee Cabul 1842 (Edwd. Rielly, 41st. Regt.) fitted with original steel clip and bar suspension, nearly extremely fine £500-700

Provenance: J. B. Hayward, August 1973.

Edward Rielly was born at Kile, Cavan, Ireland, in 1815 and attested for the 41st Foot at Liverpool on 14 September 1835. He arrived in India aboard the Java on 21 December 1836, and eventually joined his Regiment on 13 February 1837. He served with them during the First Afghan War, taking part in the operations in the vicinity of Kandahar and Ghuznee, and was present at the various engagements leading to the reoccupation of Kandahar and the entry into Cabul. He arrived back with the Regiment in England on 3 July 1843, and was discharged due to disability from chronic ulceration of the left leg and thigh in December of that year, receiving a special pension of 6d per day for three years in view of his having been ‘in general actions in Afghanistan.’ (Chelsea Hospital admission book refers).
