A Crimean War ‘Great Redan’ D.C.M. group of three awarded to Quarter-Master Sergeant William Sibbald, 89th Regiment, later Lieutenant 51st Light Infantry

William Sibbald was born at St Tanah, East Indies, on 21 November 1818. He enlisted as a Boy into the 89th Regiment on 29 November 1831, aged 14 years 7 months; Private, 29 June 1833; Sergeant, 1 August 1839; Hospital Sergeant, 1 May 1844; Colour Sergeant, 1 December 1848; Quartermaster Sergeant, 1 June 1854; Quartermaster, without purchase, 14 September 1855; Lieutenant, 51st Light Infantry, by transfer, 26 April 1864.

Served in the Crimea at Sebastopol, and attacks on 18 June (Great Redan) and 8 September 1855. Obtained Annuity and Medal for Distinguished or Meritorious Conduct in the Field, the Annuity being relinquished upon becoming an officer. Lieutenant Sibbald retired on 13 May 1874, after 43 years service. He was married by Royal Warrant to Mary Anne Boyd, at Montreal, Canada East, on 19 September 1844, and had 10 children of whom only 2 survived childhood.
